Kompyang is a type of leavened bread topped with sesame; it originated in the Fujien province in China. According to folklores, these sesame bagel-like buns were invented in the 16th century and named after the legendary General Qi Jiguang; the little hole in the center of the bun was to facilitate soldiers to pass threads through the bun and makes it easier to carry food on their necks. Basic ingredients for making the dough for Kompyang include flour, water, yeast, sugar, salt and sesame, other recipes also calls for lard and/or cream.

However, there's a special type of kompyang, which stuffed with salt, sugar, soy sauce and five spice-seasoned minced pork with chopped spring onions; it's stuffed, rolled flat and sprinkled with some water and sesame seeds, then baked into individual savory and crispy kompyang.
