Taiwanese meat ball or "Ba-wan" (肉圓) in Taiwanese dialect, refers to a translucent large dumpling with the diameter of 6-8 cm, or smaller; it's an unique food product native to Taiwan.

The most famous ba-wan is found its birthplace - Changhua. Ba-wan is usually made with a mixture of spiced ground pork, sliced or diced bamboo and hard boiled quail eggs as filling, then covered with sweet potato starch paste into a round ball; it's first steamed to form and then sunk in a low temperature oil bath to heat up before serving. There are also triangular shaped ba-wan, such as the famous ba-wan from Beidou. Most ba-wan are translucent and vaguely reveals the fillings, and are often served with a special sweet and savory sauce, soy sauce, minced garlic and chopped cilantro; the taste is quite intense and yet the flavor and textures are complex and interesting. Yet, there are many different recipes for making ba-wan in Taiwan, however, it's almost always served steamed, or in an oil bath, hardly ever deep-fried.
